delays. gabe gutierrez is in atlanta. you're watching the entire country and newark, one of the spots. >> reporter: that's right, richard. it's not too bad in atlanta right now. it's actually moving around pretty well. certainly nothing like a widespread cancellation that we saw on thursday and friday, but as you mentioned there are minor headaches up in the northeast. wind is proving to be a problem in newark right now. we are told there is an average of 45-minute delay there due to wind and wind also delayed flights in washington earlier today. washington dulles, and it was a problem there and we are told that started to clear up and in the midwest, kansas city had long lines, as well and out west, rain slowed down some of the air traffic and san francisco this morning. a lot of people that were paying attention to the weather reports said nearly one in four americans will travel in the next few days and they'll be taking advantage of the longer break with christmas and new year's both falling on a tuesday this year. back here in atlanta, travelers here are thankful that it is not q

after a mechanical problem. the united flight had taken off from houston to newark when the problem developed yesterday. over a 10-minute span, the plane dropped 10,000 feet and slowed drastically. it landed safely in new orleans. and passengers were put on another flight. >>> a week of stormy weather is finally tapering off in the west. but not before a few more hours of drenching rain in northern california. the worst is over for the pacific northwest after the fourth storm in a week brought up to a half-foot of rain and some gusty winds. in oregon, more people lost electricity when falling trees crashed down on power lines. hopefully things will stay calm there. they've paid their dues the last week or so. >>> time, now, for a look at weather across the country on this wednesday. those storms bring showers, though, to portland, seattle, salt lake city and helena. up to a foot of snow in the northern rockies, cascades and sierra nevada. a big cooldown in the midwest. scattered showers and thunderstorms in the carolinas, atlanta and new orleans. >> 50s in the northeast. mostly 40s

not reporting many delays and there's a 15-minute delay in newark and not a huge problem. san francisco reported a bigger delay today due to rain. as we look at video from other parts of the country, from st. louis and from kansas city, there's not much of a problem there. there are some long lines and for the most part travelers have gotten to where they needed to go. there are other problems, however, in the northeast and places like upstate new york, virginia and pennsylvania. snow has snarled traffic there and there is some concern that on the west coast, as well, there could be issues. for the most part, traffic is doing much better today than it did in the past two days, thursday and friday. more than 1600 cancellations throughout the country and so far today only about 75 according to flight aware.com. again, here in atlanta, it could be a whole lot worse, richard. >> they have more runways and 405 will be more difficult. gabe gutierrez at the atlanta hartsfield international airport. we'll check back in with you, thanks. >>> egyptians are going back to the polls on the constitution. the

. the newark star ledger in new jersey reporting that governor chris christie is going to ask the federal government to reimburse the state for 100% of the cost of rebuilding from superstorm sandy. christie heads to washington on thursday to meet with federal officials. you know, parts of the new jersey coastline, complete devastated by this powerful storm. you know, governor christie estimates that sandy caused upwards of $20 billion of damages. >>> and the atlanta journal-constitution with more information about dozens of children and adults that were sickened by carbon monoxide poisoning at the local school there. at least 49 people were sent to the hospital yesterday. take a look at this. fire officials believe the heating system failed there. finch elementary had no carbon monoxide detectors, either. which, i guess, they're not required in georgia. and many parents complained they were left in the lurch because of poor communication. soledad o'brien will talk to a student, a parent and also a school official. so we'll get lots of sides there. >> also coming up, amazement and dismay.
